This corrupted essence takes a form of its own, and as long as this mutation boils within them, they are bit a sliver of what they once were. Their health will suffer and they will not be able to fight until this corruption is purged. Even then, they see the futility of their actions, as the mutation that was once their essence takes form before them. This is the power of the Thaumaturgist.
